South African rape statistics

Mr Mbeki , South Africa’s president, has questioned the validity of the rape statistics provided by the South African police force. The statistic is one woman raped every twenty-six seconds.

One rape every twenty-six seconds, means 2.3 rapes per minute. This equals 138 rapes per hour, 3312 per day, roughly 99,360 per month and 1,192,320 per year. These figures now become bewildering. When we factor in the figure that only one in every thirty-six rape cases is reported, it becomes incomprehensible. The South African police cannot explain how they arrived at this figure of 1 out of 36. Now another figure, 1 rape every 12 minutes, is used.

This fact illustrates how easy, becoming emotional when working with this type of crime, is. Charlise Theron, a South African actress living in America, came to South Africa to make a television advertisement, boldly asking men in general: “Have you raped a woman today?” This question has obviously been inspired by the statistics mentioned before.  South Africa is however, still the rape capital of the world.

There is no denial that rape is a hideous crime, unacceptable in any society. Rape is of a sick individual who needs to be removed from society and locked up. The South African police are notorious for internal political and racial problems and a gross inability to perform its duties. Telephones go unanswered. No vehicles are available to respond to calls and so on. The Chief of Police, Mr Fivas, a man with years of experience, has been removed from office, to be replaced by a more politically correct person.

This new police commissioner has absolutely NO experience in police work. Is it not the lawlessness of South Africa, and the ineffectual policing, that allows rapists to walk free? Maybe Ms Theron should direct her TV questions at the police, or the politicians. Would the time, energy and money spent on making that TV commercial, asking all men whether they have raped someone today, not been better spent on helping to fund a rape crisis centre? Or perhaps using those resources to campaign the government or to form a pressure or educational group, could have been preferable. Or even helping to get the police stats right.

Let us help in a constructive manner! Wagging a finger at all men will not get their support. Another disturbing figure, is that white on white and white on black rapes are statistically insignificant. Most rapes are black on black and, to a lesser extent, black on white. Add to this that 95% of all violent crimes in South Africa, is black on black. Add to this a South African black urban legend that raping a virgin will cure Aids. (Interestingly enough, the Theron Anti Rape TV commercial was extensively shown on South Africa’s SABC3, a TV channel with a predominantly white audience.) This illuminates the horrible socioeconomic conditions for the majority of blacks. Caught up in a web of poverty, they resort to crime. Social structures crumble. Mutual respect disappears in a fight to survive or in a battle to simply exist. Violence increases.

They were Ben Freeth, who along with his in-laws Mike and Angela Campbell are challenging the Zimbabwe government’s land policy, at the SADC Tribunal in Namibia. Earlier that day the same gang had brutally assaulted another farmer in the area, Frank Trott on Twyford Farm. He is part of the group of farmers who joined in with the Campbell case in Namibia. There are 14 of them in the Chegutu area alone.

John Worsley Worswick of Justice for Agriculture said the beatings were severe and Campbell suffered a broken collar bone, broken fingers and serious concussion. His wife Angela has an arm broken in two places, while one of Freeth’s eyes is so badly damaged it is causing the doctors great concern.
The three were found around midnight, after being dumped by the gang. Worswick said they had been beaten for a prolonged period of time during which they were forced to sign papers, promising that they would withdraw the Campbell case from the courts in Windhoek. Worswick said: “Now obviously it has no force or effect on the case because they were forced to sign under extreme duress.”

Worswick said Freeth and the Campbells were attacked and abducted by ZANU-PF thugs led by Gilbert Moyo, who is notorious in the area for his violent attacks on farms. He arrived at their Mt Carmel farm on Sunday, with an armed gang that took the three into the house and beat them before forcing them onto a truck. The Campbells’ son Daniel tried to rescue them at some point, but was forced to stand down after at least 40 shots were fired by the heavily armed gang. Moyo’s name has been provided to the police in connection with several other cases of assault in the Chegutu area, yet he has never been arrested or investigated.

The farmers were targeted specifically because of the SADC case. The attack came just a day after the SADC Observer Mission to the runoff election concluded that the atmosphere was not conducive to holding free and fair elections. Several other farmers in Chegutu who attached their cases to Campbell’s in Windhoek were also targeted, despite the fact that the Tribunal issued an interim order last year, that said the Zimbabwe government would not evict them or interfere with their operations, until their case is heard.

According to Worswick, the government wants to take Campbell’s Mt. Carmel Farm and he has fought eviction through the courts. But the government passed new laws stipulating that the Zimbabwe courts could no longer hear land cases, effectively taking away the farmers’ rights to challenge the illegal acquisition of their properties. This is why Campbell took his case to the regional courts in Namibia with the hope that he would finally get justice there.

Mhlanga added that Zimbabwe is essentially the key to economic stability in the region, and voiced concerns that military intervention and a growing belief that civil war is imminent, will only further dissuade foreign investors in the region and in Africa as a whole.

At about 1700 hours on the same day a vehicle – a white Datsun 1800 pickup arrived at the gate with approximately 10-12 people. They demanded that I opened the gate because they wanted to talk to me. I refused and went into the house together with my wife. We locked ourselves into the house. They came to the house and wanted me to go outside to speak to them which I refused to do. They started smashing windows and the front door was smashed open. One of them pointed a single barrel shotgun inside the house at us – we were by then upstairs. He fired a shot directly at us which went just over my head and close to my wifes’ head. He obviously intended to kill us.. After he fired the shot he went out and it went quiet for a while and then we heard three shots coming from the workers housing area. They returned with all the workers and fired another shot whilst outside.

I managed to get through to the Assistant Inspector and the Chegutu Police Station to ask for assistance before there were dead bodies in the house. He said that I must phone him back in half and hour. Throughout all of this my wife was on the phone to numerous friends who were at the Chegutu Police Station trying to get assistance from them with absolutely no result whatsoever. My wife and I also made many phone calls to the Member in Charge on his cell phone and he refused to answer.
By this time it was dark and the power went off so we were left completely in darkness and unable to identify our own employees. They then used the workers as a shield so that they could all come inside the house and then were downstairs chanting and singing and making threats.

They sent one of the workers upstairs to demand the shotgun from me to take back to them. I refused and this employee stayed upstairs with us. They then grabbed the son of this employee who was downstairs and from what I could gather they threatened to either kill or injure him if he didn’t go back downstairs with the weapon. He went back downstairs without the weapon. After about five minutes they told all the singing workers to go upstairs using them as a shield once more. We tried to identify the workers one by one as they came up the stairs, as my wife was standing at the top of the stairs with a can of mace. After about 15 workers came through, she could not identify a person and used the mace and sprayed them. After this they ran back downstairs and out of the house.

This incensed the thugs who then proceeded to break down the back door and started a building a fire in the downstairs lounge directly below us. As we have a wooden floor upstairs this posed a great threat and we thought we would be burnt alive which is when I said that we would come out and asked if they would let us leave peacefully which they agreed to do. We asked the ring-leader to identify himself. We came downstairs and they demanded the shotgun from me which was loaded and off safety and I refused. They then insisted that I give it to them and I tried to start unloading it and they attacked me. They then grabbed my wife around the throat and she started screaming. While they were trying to take the shotgun from me three shots went off outside the house into the ground as it is a semi-automatic shotgun. They then took the shotgun from me and wrestled me to the ground and started beating me with what I assume was sticks, or pipes and kicking me with their boots. They dragged my wife outside and they were trying to strangle her. At this stage she managed to bite the hand of the man who was grabbing her round the throat. Whereupon he started to beat her. At one time there were at least four men beating and kicking her.

They then tied me up with rope and threw me into the back of their pickup. At this stage my wife was still being beaten. When they had finished beating her, one of them grabbed her by her feet and dragged her over to the vehicle. They then demanded that she stand up and get into the back of the truck which she was unable to do. One of them grabbed her by the hair, pulled her into a standing position and pushed her up against the back of the truck and told her to get in. She did climb in. They searched my wife and found the car-keys in her pocket and demanded she show them what vehicle the keys were for. They couldn’t find the keys to the other truck. They drove my vehicle onto the lawn, parked near the truck where I was tied up. The immobiliser for the vehicle went off. They demanded that my wife show them where the immobiliser switch was situated which she did do. One of them drove off with the vehicle which we never saw again. They still had all the employees on the lawn around a fire that had been lit by the front door and they were still forced to sing.

There were about four or five of them around the vehicle watching the two of us, all the time they were shouting verbal abuse and racist comments and threatening to kill either one or both of us and also stating the manner in which they should kill us. This must have gone on for almost an hour. They were burning my feet with cigarettes and then we saw vehicle lights shining towards us and then my wife was told to get out of the vehicle and was dragged towards the headlights of the vehicle that had arrived. When she got to the vehicle she saw there were four armed policeman from Kadoma Police Station who asked what had happened. She told them briefly what had happened and demanded that they fetch me immediately from the vehicle as she feared for my life. One of the thugs came and untied me and told me to get out of the vehicle and made me walk towards the headlights of the parked vehicle. I noticed that they were armed policeman. The incident was described in more detail to them and they accompanied us into the house to get some warm clothing. Once we were in the house we saw that the gun cabinet had been opened and ransacked and that my weapons were missing. I informed the police that the weapons were missing. They then took us out of the house and told us to get in their vehicle as we were going to Chegutu Police Station to make a report.

We got to Chegutu Police Station and they had to call some superior officer to take a statement and he only arrived as were were leaving to go to Harare to get urgent medical attention. No police personal of any authority seemed to show any interest in taking our statement.

We were attended to by medical staff at the Avenues Clinic where numerous x-rays and CT scans were taken. My injuries are two cracked verterbrae in my lower back. Fractured cheekbone, fractured nose there was copious bleeding into my sinuses and extensive lacerations and deep-tissue bruising to my face and back and a bite to my right earlobe.

My wifes injuries are fractured cheekbones, fractures around her orbital socket round her eye, perforated eardrum, cracked ribs and extensive bruising to her face and back and throat.

Several months ago a hapless Capetonian woman who was savagely assaulted by a gang of heavily armed  Metro cops, for the crime of walking her dog on a beach. Judging from the numerous incidents countrywide, where these worthless  beasts go out of their way to harass, assault and abuse especially White women, kids and senior citizens, things are getting worse every day. Uniformed black scum prey on what they perceive as ‘weaker’ targets, with Whites bearing the brunt of these state-sponsored racist hate crimes.

In this latest incident, Deirdre O’Neill was called a “dirty white bitch” by the black officer, then viciously beaten for the horrendous crime of allowing her puppy to defecate in the street. This is an almost daily occurrence in South Africa, all while violent rapists, hijackers and murderers have free criminal reign.

A Sea Point woman - in Cape Town - landed in hospital with severe facial injuries after allegedly being beaten up by Metro Police officers who confronted her when her daughter’s Jack Russell puppy defecated in the street.

Deirdre O’Neill was then held in police custody at the Sea Point police station for about four hours.

She is facing charges of riotous behaviour and obstructing an officer in the execution of his official duties.

O’Neill was walking six-month-old Dogmatix along Sea Point Main Road on Tuesday morning when the incident occurred.

Speaking at the emergency unit at Somerset Hospital, a tearful O’Neill said she had never in her “wildest dreams” thought that an innocent morning stroll would turn this “ugly”.

Her clothing was still drenched in blood and she had a deep gash on her forehead and bruises and scrapes on her face, arms and knees.

She had X-rays to check if there was damage to her ribs.

O’Neill, who works from home, said she walked her daughter Tanitha Jolly’s puppy every morning.

But on Tuesday Dogmatix defecated twice on the route and a Metro policeman approached O’Neill.

“He told me to pick up the dog’s “shit”, but I only had the one bag on me that was already used, and I had thrown it away already,” she said.

O’Neill said the Metro policeman was threatening to arrest her. When she asked for his identity, he allegedly replied: “I’ll show you my identity” and began attacking her, she told the Cape Argus.

When she resisted, a scuffle ensued.

“He headlocked me after he cuffed me, then rammed me into a wall. He said he would “fuck” me three times. He hit me with his elbow; I saw stars. He then threw me into the back of the police van and took me to Sea Point police station,” she said.

O’Neill said her house was a three-minute walk from where the incident happened.

“I would have got another plastic bag to pick up after the dog.

“I am angry, horrified beyond belief. My fear is not the gangsters out there but the cops and what they are capable of doing to me and getting away with it,” she said.

Tanitha Jolly was the first person her mother phoned after the incident.

She told the Cape Argus that her mother usually took a plastic bag to pick up after Dogmatix.

Residents of Sea Point were “fanatical” about cleaning up after their dogs during walks, she said.

“You don’t understand how serious we are about this (cleaning up after the dogs).

“We would carry water and Dettol to clean the ground after the dog urinated,” she said.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Billy Jones confirmed that O’Neill had been arrested on a charge of riotous behaviour as well as obstructing an officer in the execution of his official duties.

O’Neill was released on warning and was due to appear in the Cape Town magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Metro police spokesperson Kevin Maxwell said he was unaware of the incident, but that the department would look into launching an internal investigation into the conduct of the metro police officer.

Dikeledi Phiri, the national spokesperson for the police watchdog, the Independent Complaints Directorate, said the ICD strongly condemned such behaviour.

“The police are not supposed to assault anyone, even if they witness a criminal kill someone.

“They (the police) have to follow procedure and assaulting someone is not part of that procedure,” she said.

As soon as we face up to these facts, we can only come to the conclusion that we will have to take the necessary steps to rectify this sordid situation.
The time for paid politics is past and it is time for ordinary law abiding citizens to wake up and realise that the future is in their own hands.

Police and the private security firm ADT were on the scene within five minutes. Stoltz had the CCTV system installed barely a week before this incident. “I thank God that I looked at the CCTV screen at that moment, it could have turned out very differently for me and my family”.

Residents of Pretoria have in recent weeks been terrorised by armed robberies where homes are looted, and families are raped, tortured and murdered.

Cape Town - The wording of department of defence advertisements calling for job applications from people who have no “serious” criminal record is an error, according to the defence ministry.

“I’m advised by the department that that is a mistake,” spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi said on Monday. The adverts, for recruitment into military skills development programmes in the navy and air force, were placed in the Sunday Times on Sunday. Under “minimum requirements”, the ads say applicants must have “no record of a serious criminal offence”.

However, Mkhwanazi said he was informed that this wording was carried over from an earlier, also erroneous, advert, and that the new ads had not been approved at a senior level. He said “any sort” of criminal record would disqualify an applicant.

Earlier on Monday, Democratic Alliance defence spokesperson Andries Botha said it was disgraceful that the defence force and the department, both of which were designed to uphold the law, should be willing to take on people with criminal records. “It sets the wrong example and undermines the department’s desperate need to build a better, more effective and accountable defence force,” he said. “There are millions of law-abiding unemployed citizens in South Africa whom the [department] should instead look to recruit.”

He said he would ask Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota a parliamentary question to establish how many people currently employed by the defence force and department had criminal records. Botha said he also wanted to know which specific crimes the department did not regard as “serious criminal offences”.

THEY KILL CHILDREN DONT THEY ?

As South Africans we are often tagged with becoming desensitized to the crime in this country; getting used to the levels of brutality because of their frequency, adjusted to a way of life imprisoned in homes that offer little real security.

But this – the cold-blooded murder of two children in Centurion who were bravely trying to prevent intruders entering their home – their little bodies pushed against a door trying to keep out a grown man, their little hands trying desperately to keep the door handle closed.

How can anybody be desensitized to this kind of thing? Amongst the insanity of this God-forsaken criminal hell-hole every now and again there is a crime like this that stands out and burns itself into your memory, Stompie Sepei, Lee Matthews, the young girl in Margate over Christmas, the young girl murdered by that animal dubbed the “mine dump killer” and now these two little children

They were two little heroes in the true sense of the word.

In South Africa we have two types of heroes, kids like these and the “Struggle Heroes” The history of the “Struggle Heroes” shows only that they their heroics were confined to engaging passive targets – bombing civilian establishments and churches. Using these and other cowardly hit and run tactics, their activities by any definition could only be defined as acts of terror. Yet somehow, the rest of the world and like-minded sycophants have deemed the cumulative outcome of these terror activities a “Liberation Struggle”

I’m a layman, but my understanding of “Liberation” means freedom from or for something. In SA we have been led to believe that the freedom struggle was for the right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom to strike, freedom of association, freedom and the right to live blah blah blah…

But when one considers what level of freedom has actually been achieved in South Africa there is not much – same as Zimbabawe; they have the vote, they have the land but they have precious little else. They have no employment, no money, no viable political alternative to ZANU-PF, no food, no housing, no fuel, but they are free.

The only freedom in South Africa is the freedom of criminals to run amok and do as they please with absolute impunity.

What a noble “Liberation Struggle” this was – what noble heroic people these are?

After all where in the world would you find people so brave that they can heroically gun down innocent unarmed children, innocent unarmed senior citizens, rape babies and octogenarians and heroically defy justice on every count?

I seems that the heroes of the new South Africa have defined a new level of heroism – long may their heroism be remembered so that one day when somebody wakes up the situation in South Africa will be seen for what it is – ANARCHY – and they will be seen for what they really are – COWARDS WHO KILL CHILDREN !

As for Shabir Shaik, things are just dandy, thank you! Shaik, who was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for fraud and corruption, was sent off to the slammer in November 2006. Barely a week after his arrival, Shaik was transferred to an expensive private hospital (St Augustine’s) WHERE HE HAS REMAINED SINCE. Yes dear reader, Mr Shaik has spent more than sixty days in private hospital stay, with an (conservatively) estimated cost of R 60 000 which will likely be footed by YOU, the conscientious tax payer. Mr Shaik, formerly the epitome of health, has suddenly developed numerous ailments, such as hay fever, a mild depression, blood pressure, sore gums and a whole host of serious, life-threatening maladies.

As with Yengeni’s prison life of privilege, St Augustine’s hospital has become Shaik’s de facto corporate headquarters, where he receives an endless stream of regime ministers, party apparatchiks, family and friends. The Pretoria News reports that despite hospitals being grim places where people sit around and worry about the condition of their loved ones, this is not the status quo at all – it claims that an avalanche of letters and phone calls to newspapers (by stunned visitors, doctors and nurses) are reporting quite the opposite – Mr Shaik is having a huge jol!

According to one staffer, Shaik goes for a daily walk to the hospital car park at around 5 PM, where he holds court with numerous friends and associates. Then, at around 7 PM when it’s nice and dark, a big black Mercedes swings into the parking lot, collects Mr Shaik who then disappears home for the night – every night. Judge Nathan Erasmus, who heads up the Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons, coyly said that he was “monitoring the situation”. A medical practitioner working at St Augustine’s was quoted as saying “In my opinion this is a case of a crooked patient and crooked doctors.”

A motorist claims a Naledi traffic official said this to him during an argument about the traffic cop parking his car in the middle of the town’s main road.
Henk de Jager, 32, and his wife, Elmarie, from the farm Leliefontein, were in town for business on Saturday and they wanted to get something to eat.

A traffic official had parked his car in front of the driveway to the KFC in the main road.

“I hooted at him, but he just got out of his car and made an obscene gesture. We stopped next to him and I spoke to him angrily,” said De Jager.

The traffic official then threatened De Jager with death.

“I got out and approached him. He hit me on the chest. Then another person approached us from the side and hit me. I stumbled. The official held my hands behind my back while the other person beat me,” he said.

A large number of curious onlookers gathered and encouraged the traffic official and the man beating him.

“I heard them shouting. I then really feared for my life,” said De Jager.

Gerrit van Straaten and his brother Japie heard the noise from the opposite side of the road and came to De Jager’s aid. Gerrit was also assaulted. Japie stepped in and the three men made their way to De Jager’s car.

De Jager and the Van Straaten brothers went to the police station. Shortly afterwards the traffic official also turned up.

“He stood there laughing and boasted that his brother would get him out soon,” said Gerrit.

The official also taunted eyewitnesses at the police station, threatening he would “get them”.

A Beeld reader who happened to be at the police station said the “smiling traffic official” joked with police officials while the bloodied De Jager made a statement nearby.

“Shortly afterwards another traffic official turned up at the police station and scolded the policemen,” said the Beeld reader, who wanted to remain anonymous.

De Jager, his shocked wife and the Van Straaten brothers went to hospital for treatment. “I suffered serious facial injuries,” said De Jager.

David Sikhomba, the local traffic chief, had not reacted to Beeld’s messages by late on Tuesday.

The police confirmed that a charge of assault with the intent to do serious bodily harm was being investigated against the traffic official.

The official had in turn laid a charge of crimen injuria against De Jager.

Mariska Louw, 22, said a man waited for her inside her flat in Lydenburg when she returned from a party on Friday evening.

Louw gave permission for her name to be published, but didn’t want a photograph published for fear of being recognised in public.

She moved from Centurion to Lydenburg in an attempt to make a new start after the trauma she had experienced last year.

Police ‘could’ve helped her’

Louw’s car was hijacked in September last year. Ten days later her fiance, Werner van Jaarsveldt, saw people driving the car. He phoned the police and pursued the car, but was apparently shot dead by the hijackers. Louw found his body in Midrand. They would have married in November.

About the rape she said: “I went home at about 00:20. The front door was locked when I arrived. I locked it again and took an ashtray upstairs (the first floor of the duplex). When I opened the bathroom door, a naked man stood there. He grabbed me by the throat.”

Louw, who has several scrapes, bruises and bitemarks to her body, said she hit the man over the head with the ashtray. During a struggle the man dragged her by the hair to the bathroom and broke her perfume bottle against the side of the bath.

“He said: ‘Shut up or I will kill you.’ He tore clothes he had thrown from the laundry basket and tied up my mouth, legs and hands.’

After he had raped her on her bed, he wrapped her head with the torn clothes and tied her to a pipe.

“I heard him locking my bedroom door. I couldn’t breathe.”

Louw said she managed to untie herself and screamed for help from the window. She saw the man get out of her Toyota Yaris and run away. She didn’t scream again as she was afraid he would return. The man took her cellphone.

She waited inside her bedroom until later on Saturday morning. She then borrowed a cellphone from workers at the premises to phone her parents and a friend with a spare key to her flat.

Pieter Louw, her father, said what bothered him most was that police didn’t turn up after neighbours had phoned them during the incident on Friday evening. The neighbours heard her daughter’s screams.

“The neighbours later went to the police station to fetch them. The police shone a torch on the flat and walked around it before leaving again. The rapist was still inside the flat at the time.”

“My child could have been dead and the police could have saved her,” he said. His daughter was receiving antiretroviral treatment.

She said South Africa had met Britain to discuss the review. South Africa was attempting to deal with the passport corruption.

The 41 year old victim was shot dead on his way home from work on a bus from Claremont to Mitchells Plain.

Three men started robbing passengers, and when they came to Pearson he gave them two of his rings but refused to hand over his wedding band.The men shot him in the arm but he still refused. Then they said: “We are not joking,” and shot him in chest.

Police said one of the passengers was robbed of R23 000 in cash and cheques before the robbers got off the bus and fled the scene in a white BMW with a blue bonnet. It is believed one of the robbers boarded the bus at a Claremont bus stop and the other two during the journey to Mitchells Plain.Golden Arrow said this was “an isolated incident”.

There had been a trend towards attacks and robberies on buses, so the assumption of “safety in numbers” does not apply to South Africa”s public bus network.

Robbers often held drivers up at gunpoint, telling them to slow down while they robbed passengers of money, jewellery and cellphones. Sometimes robbers targeted drivers for the money.

The Beeld newspaper reports of two young white men who stopped to fill up at a garage and was harassed by a black traffic cop. The cop, Enoch Sifuanda beat and wrestled the young man to the ground and choked him unconscious with the filling line of one of the pumps. When the white man, Ruan De Beer gained consciousness he was repeatedly kicked in the head by the cop and in the groin by the black petrol attendant. It was all captured on CCTV. The other white guy in the video who stands by doing nothing, is Ruan’s so called friend, Stefan du Preez. Look at all the blacks who surrounded them and who do nothing to stop this racist attack.

The police drove by and rescued the young man, but then proceeded to lock up the two WHITE victims, for resisting arrest!!! Yes people, this is the reality of South Africa. Innocent whites get assaulted by blacks and then the whites gets arrested. This victimization of whites is common and occurs on a daily basis on various degrees.

Amazing how the media does not point out this blatant racist attack. This cop was previously in the news for the same thing. In June 2007 he assaulted a white woman, Lana Braun, in front of her family. He was also previously charged for assaulting a family member.

Staff have also had instances where people have gone out for the evening - and even on holiday - leaving doors open or not activating their alarm systems.

‘It has taken time for me to talk about it’

When confronted, their response is normally “But we’re living in a secure estate and the guards and neighbours will look after our property. We’re safe and we’re paying for this.”

Victims of this chilling new trend are Lynne Katz and her family from Atholl, north-east of Joburg, who survived a terrifying two-hour ordeal after robbers broke into their home inside a security complex. Her husband Jay was stabbed 15 times and they threatened to kill her baby Ethan, aged 15 months.

The robbers had entered their home through an open windows after managing to get over the complex’s electric fence.

Although the attack took place late last year, Katz is still undergoing treatment to help her deal with the trauma.

“It has taken time for me to talk about it, but I feel strongly that victims of crime must speak out so that others can know what’s happening,” Katz explains.

‘Statistics show that this type of crime still happens regularly’

“We’re very lucky to be alive; they could have raped me, and Jay could have died. This isn’t a good reflection on our country,” said Katz, adding: “But I won’t be driven out of my home. I still believe South Africa has so much potential.”

The family’s ordeal began just before midnight when Katz, who had just fallen asleep, woke up and saw five men in her bedroom.

“They had our kitchen knives in their hands, I knew it was going to be a long night.”

She says one man jumped on top of her and another jumped on top of her husband, stabbing him several times, while three of the men tied them both up with computer cables.

“They knew exactly what they were doing because they went directly to our walk-in closet where we keep most of our valuables,” said Katz.

“They ransacked the place and took clothes, jewellery and Jay’s gun. Then they wanted the key for the safe. We told them that it was in the closet. I offered to help look for it - but we couldn’t find it.”

The men didn’t believe her and threatened to kill her baby - but they couldn’t get inside the infant’s room as the night nurse had barricaded the door by pushing a couch against it.

Then the robbers demanded an iron because they wanted to torture Katz and her husband.

“They terrorised us for two hours. They had a smoke in our room and then they dragged me downstairs because they wanted alcohol. I was trying to be as helpful as I could to draw attention away from my bleeding husband and our baby and night nurse.”

She managed to distract them by pouring them drinks and offering more valuables.

“I just wanted them out of the house. I was prepared to do anything, give them anything they wanted. They asked for our car keys, which I gave them and even explained how the remotes worked - that number one is for the garage door and number two is for the entrance gate.”

But when they couldn’t start Jay’s BMW, they asked Lynne to do it for them.

“I had only started that car once before. I wasn’t sure if I could do it again. But thank God it started. I just wanted them to leave.”

At that stage the night nurse went onto the balcony of the baby’s room and screamed as loudly as she could, which alerted the neighbours and scared off the robbers.

Within minutes of being summoned, the couple’s security company and the police arrived. Two of the robbers were caught hiding under some bushes just metres from the complex.

It was later established that the attackers were friends of the son of their former domestic worker, who had died. He was also arrested for masterminding the robbery.

Bantjes warns residents of walled estates and security complexes not to believe they are immune from driveway robberies.

“Sadly, our statistics show that this type of crime still happens regularly within security estates and even complexes. People in security estates seem to be less vigilant when approaching their homes than those on the outside. There’s also often no control over the movement of strangers inside estates,” he said.

Another modus operandi is for criminals to rent properties within secure complexes and then take their time to observe properties before striking.

“Criminals have been discovered moving into quite a few of the more affluent estates by either renting units or even buying properties. For obvious reasons this poses a serious threat to the security of the community inside the estate.”

eBlockwatch founder Andre Snyman said most robberies at complexes are reported by people who live north of Joburg.

“What we’ve found is that the security guards placed at the gates of these complexes aren’t deterrents for robbers. They know that the guard isn’t going to risk his own life,” he said.

Gauteng police spokesperson Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said that although police had not seen a recent increase in house robberies at complexes, residents should be vigilant.

“People must not be complacent about safety issues. They must also be extra careful about who they employ to clean their houses and do their gardening. We encourage residents to call the police immediately if they notice suspicious people hanging around their complexes.”

According to crime statistics, house robberies have increased by 7 percent. Here are some tips to safeguard your home and your family:

Be familiar with the response company who manages the security for your complex.

Ensure you have the number of your security provider programmed into the speed dial on your cellphone.

Advise them if you’re expecting visitors but instruct them never to allow anyone into your premises without your permission.

If you feel you’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station or service station where there are other people around.

Make sure the security personnel at the gate of the complex are aware if your house alarm is triggered.

Remember that cheap security is no security. Don’t regard security as a cost - a good security approach can reduce your insurance premiums.

In addition, take a broad view of security - the more you integrate your approach, the more you save and the better your security will be.

Don’t rely on an alarm sounder only. An alarm without a response is just a noise - ensure that your alarm is monitored.

Make sure your security provider has updated records of your correct contact details and those of your key holders.

Use your burglar alarm to its full potential. Your burglar alarm should be properly managed and checked on a regular basis to ensure it is fully operational.

Create a “safe area” in your home.

Install adequate lighting.

Install outside lights that can be remotely controlled from inside the house and the alarm system. Consider installing lighting activated by a motion detector.

Programme your phone with the number of the complex’s gatehouse security before going to bed. Dial the number and hang up before the call is answered. This will give you a time advantage, as all you then need to do is press the redial button.

Increase your view - high walls and hedges obscure the view of the property.

Don’t assume it always happens to someone else. Always be prepared.

  No need to send young Johan Nel off to Sterkies for observation. The motive is as clear as daylight.

Johannesburg - “Mom, something snapped inside me,” were the words of a young man to his mother before he was arrested for shooting and killing three people in a squatter camp in the North West province.

Corrie Nel, mother of Johan Nel, 18, said her son had “snapped”.

“If you knew him, you would know that he did not act rationally.”

She said he had been attacked in 2003 when he was 14, “by a black man with a sickle”, after which he had shot at the man; in another incident seven years ago he had been traumatised by an attack on his brother on their farm; last Sunday he had heard about an incident in which burglars had apparently pumped gas into the room where a friend’s wife and her three-week-old baby were; and on Monday morning he’d heard of another attack on a farm in their area.

‘Seriously injured’

She said she hadn’t had a chance to properly talk to her son after the shooting at the squatter camp, but Johan had told her: “Mom, something snapped inside me.”

Nel was on Tuesday arrested for shooting and killing three residents of the Skielik squatter camp about 3km from their house on the farm Tweefontein.

He will appear in the Swartruggens court on Thursday on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Seven people were injured in the incident, three of them seriously.

Among the dead, was a baby girl of three months and a 10-year-old boy. They were shot with a .303 rifle.

Superintendent Louis Jacobs said Nel had been found guilty in 2003 of the negligent firing of a firearm after an incident with a man cutting the lawn.

Sentencing would have been postponed to this year if Nel was found guilty of another offence.

According to his mother, Johan at the time “only fired shots to defend himself”.

She blamed herself for not arranging counselling at the time for Johan because he had been “already hysterical” after this incident as well as when his brother had been attacked in 2001 in their farmhouse.

Seven years ago, seven armed men attacked Johan’s older brother Heinrich on a Sunday morning at their home.

The rest of the family was at church.

Heinrich fought back and managed to get a hold of his father’s revolver and chase them away.

‘No racism here’

The robbers told Heinrich they would wait for the whole family and kill everyone.

Afterwards, their plan was to attack another farmer in the area, Heinrich had told Beeld at the time.

“All of us were upset about this,” said Heinrich on Wednesday.

According to his mother, Johan had become “physically ill” after hearing of the gas incident at his friend’s house.

“Fortunately, they survived (the gas attack).”

She said she thought Johan had stomach flu afterwards, but now realised it was not that at all.

A resident of Swartruggens said some residents in town felt that “a thing was being made over the fact that we are a racist community, but there is no racism here. On the contrary, the farmers have given police their full co-operation in helping to find the suspect”.

Klerksdorp - A 15-year-old boy from Lichtenburg is recovering in Wilmed Park Private Hospital after three attackers overpowered him and stabbed him nine times while trying to steal his bicycle and cellphone.

Theo Nel, a Grade 9 pupil at Lichtenburg High School, was on his way to a shop to buy a cellphone top-up voucher when the three men overpowered him on Thursday afternoon.

They pulled him off the bicycle and started stabbing him. He was stabbed in the ribs, arms, back and sides. He prevented them from stabbing him in the neck.

Police spokesperson , confirmed the incident

Durban - Two police officers at the Thornville police station have been accused of dereliction of duty after they were found drunk and asleep on the job when a hijack victim came looking for assistance one Saturday evening.

Sunshine Bakery bread van driver Vincent Ngcobo’s woes started at about 14:00 as he and his assistant, Sbongile Memela, finished delivering bread in Edendale.

Four armed men on a narrow road in the Mpumuza area surprised the pair.

The gang grabbed Memela at gunpoint and forced him into a car before two of them drove the van off with Ngcobo still inside.

“It happened so quickly that I was not even aware where they were taking me, but I was dropped at Henley Dam. While they drove with me I thought: ‘This is it and I’m going to die’,” said Memela, adding that he was also worried about Ngcobo’s safety.

Policemen should have helped

Sunshine Bakeries sales manager Lucky Naicker told The Witness that Ngcobo was dumped somewhere near Baynesfield. Naicker said Ngcobo walked to the Thornville police station, where he tried to open a case.

“He was there for two hours and no one assisted him and he said that the two policemen at the station were drunk. This allegation was repeated by the driver who went to pick him up,” said Naicker.

Later when Naicker phoned the police station he spoke to an Inspector Khumalo, who he said sounded drunk.

Naicker said Ngcobo eventually managed to borrow a phone and call the bakery and a driver was dispatched to pick him up. Naicker said Ngcobo was very traumatised.

“What hurt him most was that the policemen who were there to help him did nothing,” he said.

A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said Ngcobo could not have opened the case with Thornville police since the incident did not take place under their area of jurisdiction.

Naicker said he phoned 10111 and a spoke to a Captain Sithole who said she would phone the station commander of Thornville, a Captain Naude, who was at a function.

“She promised that she would go and see what was going on at the station.” Naicker said 10111 also said they would send a vehicle to look for the bread van.

“The call was made at about 20:30 on Saturday, when no van arrived by 23:00, Ngcobo and the driver who had come to fetch him went home,” said Naicker.

Naicker said the bakery only managed to lay a charge on Sunday afternoon at the Plessislaer police station.

“By then the van had long gone with its cargo of bread valued at about R10 000. Police have subsequently told me that Thornville should have opened a docket.”

“I’m very upset at this level of inefficiency and appalled by the allegation of drunkenness.”

“But I’m even more upset that my driver was visibly traumatised and no attempt was made to help him. The driver was very shaken that policeman made no attempt to help him,” he said.

The van was found abandoned on Monday Baynesfield. About R9 000 in cash had been stolen, but nothing else, Naicker said.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said police have taken note of the allegations and investigations are under way.

Truck hijacking decreased in 2007 in the Midlands area, according to police statistics.

Three people have been arrested after a seven-year-old KwaZulu-Natal boy was beheaded for R20 000 in what is believed to be a muti transaction, KwaDabeka police said Monday.

Police Captain Bongani Khomo said the incident has left police officers and the Clermont community in shock.

“We have established that suspect one and two were hired by a third man to kill the boy for R20 000,” he said.

“The first two suspects were living at a deserted home in Clermont and on Saturday police found the head in their possession at the home — which is situated next to St John’s church,” said Khomo.

He said the home, north west of Durban, was previously owned by former Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mhlahlo Mlotshwa.

He has since died and two of the suspects had been occupying a room in the home, which was thought to be deserted, said Khomo.

The boy — whose identity could not yet be released by police — went missing on 1 November.

His body was found a day later at a location in Clermont. The details of the discovery was not released to the media at the time.

His head was missing and could not be found at the scene.

Police Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said police were acting on information when they arrested the three.

Khomo said after the boy was killed, the man who hired the killers did not pay the money.

“We believe the child’s head was intended to be used for muti,” said Khomo.

The men are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder and for contravening the Human Tissues Act.

At some point during the day, the old woman must have left her house to go outside, whereupon the attackers sneaked into the house and ambushed her when she came back in. The motive is unknown but suspected to be robbery. All they took were three bottles of shampoo, a cellphone and the bread knife with which they savagely attacked her.

The attack happened this past Friday night. She is seriously injured but stable. The attacker wanted to cut off her fingers with a bread knife, right arm lost much arterial blood for about six hours, necrosis has started setting in due to blood loss, prognosis for retaining her arm is good. It is not known whether she was raped but this is highly likely.”
